Mark Zuckerberg entered a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday, his arrival marked not just by the high-profile nature of his testimony, but by the subtle branding of his company's latest hardware. Several members of his security detail were seen wearing Meta's Ray-Ban AI smart glasses, their small corner cameras and distinctive logo on clear display as they moved through the courthouse where recording devices are prohibited.
The CEO's appearance is part of a pivotal lawsuit, now in its second month, that compares the social media industry's confrontation over user safety to the legal reckoning once faced by tobacco companies. The case involves a young woman who claims she developed an addiction to platforms including Instagram and YouTube. Her legal team argues that Meta, along with other tech firms, understood their app designs and features could harm young users' mental health but misled the public about the risks. TikTok and Snap have already settled.
Meta has firmly rejected these claims. A company spokesperson stated the core issue for the jury is determining if Instagram played a significant role in the plaintiff's specific struggles. Last week, Instagram head Adam Mosseri testified, drawing a distinction between problematic use and clinical addiction, noting that 'too much is relative, it's personal.'
This Los Angeles proceeding is one of several major legal challenges for Meta this year. The company is simultaneously defending itself in a New Mexico trial where the state's Attorney General, Raúl Torrez, alleges Meta created a 'dangerous product' that facilitates the targeting and exploitation of children. Another similar federal trial is scheduled to begin in California later this year, continuing the industry's unprecedented legal scrutiny.
