Data Sovereignty
Every time you call a cloud AI API, your data leaves your control. You trust the provider won't log it, train on it, or expose it. On-premise AI removes that trust requirement entirely.
What Happens When You Call a Cloud AI API
When your application sends data to OpenAI, Google, or Amazon for AI processing, the following happens:
- Your data leaves your network and travels over the public internet (encrypted via TLS, but still traversing external infrastructure).
- It arrives at the provider's data center - potentially in a different country, subject to different laws.
- The provider processes your data on shared infrastructure. Other customers' data runs on the same hardware.
- Your data may be logged for debugging, abuse detection, or service improvement. Retention policies vary and change.
- Some providers reserve the right to use API inputs for model training unless you explicitly opt out.
- The response travels back across the internet to your application.
At every step, you are relying on the provider's policies, infrastructure security, and compliance. You cannot verify any of these claims independently.
What Happens With On-Premise AI
- Your application sends data to a server in your building, on your network.
- The AI model processes it on hardware you own and control.
- The result goes back to your application. Done.
No internet involved. No third party. No policy to read. No opt-out to configure. No trust required.
Cloud AI vs On-Premise AI
| Concern | Cloud AI | On-Premise AI |
|---|---|---|
| Data location | Provider's data center (US, EU, Asia - varies) | Your building |
| Data transit | Public internet (TLS encrypted) | Local network only |
| Third-party access | Provider employees, subprocessors | None |
| Data logging | Varies by provider, often yes | You control all logs |
| Training data risk | Possible unless opted out | Zero - models are pre-trained |
| Jurisdiction | Provider's country's laws | Your country's laws only |
| Audit capability | Rely on SOC2/ISO reports | Full physical and logical access |
| Air-gap possible | No | Yes - fully disconnected |
Who Needs Data Sovereignty
Government & Defense
Classified and sensitive data cannot touch commercial cloud infrastructure. Air-gapped AI is often a hard requirement.
Healthcare
Patient data protected by HIPAA, GDPR, and local health information laws. Cloud processing creates audit and compliance burden.
Financial Services
Trading algorithms, customer financial data, and risk models are competitive assets. Exposure to cloud providers creates unacceptable risk.
Legal Firms
Attorney-client privilege extends to data processing. Sending case files to a cloud API may waive privilege protection.
Manufacturing & IP
Product designs, quality specs, and process data are trade secrets. On-premise AI protects intellectual property.
Regulated Industries
Any industry with data residency requirements - data must stay in a specific country or facility.
Keep Your Data Where It Belongs
We install AI systems on your hardware, in your facility. Your data never crosses a network boundary.
