Air-Gapped AI
Some environments cannot have any network connection to the outside world. Air-gapped AI runs entirely offline - no internet, no updates phoning home, no possibility of data exfiltration.
What Air-Gapped Means
An air-gapped system has no physical or wireless connection to any external network. No ethernet cable to the internet. No WiFi. No Bluetooth. The only way data enters or leaves is through physically controlled media (USB drives, secure file transfers through a data diode).
Air-gapping is the highest level of network security. It is used by military and intelligence organizations, nuclear facilities, critical infrastructure operators, financial trading systems, and any environment where data leakage is unacceptable.
Until recently, air-gapped environments could not use AI because AI required cloud API calls. With local AI models like Ollama, LLaVA, and open-source LLMs, full AI capability is now possible on completely disconnected hardware.
How Air-Gapped AI Deployment Works
Hardware provisioned on a connected network
GPU server is set up and configured on a staging network with internet access. Ollama is installed, models are downloaded, dependencies are resolved.
Models and software are verified
All downloaded software is checksummed and verified. Model weights are validated. The complete environment is tested end-to-end.
System is transferred to air-gapped environment
The server is physically moved to the secure facility. All network interfaces except the internal LAN are disabled or physically removed.
Internal network integration
The AI server connects only to the air-gapped internal network. Applications on the same network call the AI via local REST API.
Updates via secure media
Model updates and software patches are loaded via verified USB drives or data diodes following your security protocol.
What Works Offline
Text Generation & Analysis
LLMs run entirely from local model files. No internet needed for inference. Document analysis, summarization, Q&A all work offline.
Image Recognition
Vision models like LLaVA process images locally. Product classification, defect detection, document scanning - all offline.
Document Search (RAG)
Embeddings are generated locally. Vector search runs on local PostgreSQL with pgvector. Your document library is searchable without any cloud.
Code Analysis
Code-specialized models review, explain, and generate code entirely offline. Useful for classified software environments.
Environments That Require Air-Gapping
