YouTube is making its internal deepfake detection system available to a broad range of public figures. The tool, developed over several years, is now open for actors, musicians, athletes, and creators to register their likeness. Once enrolled, the system scans the platform for potential synthetic replicas, allowing the individual's team to review and request removal.

Mary Ellen Coe, YouTube's chief business officer, describes the initiative as a "foundational layer of responsibility." The move follows a pilot program that began with talent agency CAA. The expansion signals YouTube's attempt to get ahead of a problem that has escalated rapidly, highlighted by recent viral synthetic videos featuring actors like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.

The mechanism operates similarly to YouTube's longstanding Content ID system for copyrighted music, but focuses on biometric identity. A key point: removal is not automatic. Parody and satire are protected, but videos involving "realistic and consequential disparagement" or direct "content replacement" are subject to takedown.

Industry reaction is cautiously positive. Jason Newman of Untitled Entertainment notes the tool protects a performer's core "real estate"—their face and body—at no cost. For now, the focus is solely on identification and removal, not monetization of fan-created synthetic media. That more complex question, involving revenue sharing from deepfakes, is a discussion for another day. YouTube's immediate goal is to provide a measure of control and visibility on a platform where unauthorized digital doubles can now be created by anyone.
