YouTube is now offering its AI deepfake detection tool to a new class of users: political figures and journalists. The move, announced today, aims to protect individuals at the center of public discourse from synthetic media designed to deceive. Verified participants can review videos flagged for using their likeness and request removal under YouTube's privacy policies.
The tool, first launched in December 2024 for high-profile entertainers and athletes, was later extended to YouTube's Partner Program creators. Now, a pilot group of civic leaders and reporters will gain access. "We recognized this technology needed to serve more than our creator community," said Amjad Hanif, YouTube's VP of Creator Products. "Starting with this pilot allows us to understand how these users will apply it to safeguard their online presence, especially during election periods."
Company executives emphasized the balance between protection and free expression. Detection does not guarantee removal. Parody, satire, and political critique are protected. "We have a strong history of defending free speech," stated Leslie Miller, VP of Government Affairs & Public Policy. "A clear parody of a world leader will likely remain on the platform."
Interestingly, among the millions of creators already using the system, the volume of formal removal requests has been minimal. Many find the tool's primary value is in awareness, monitoring how their image is used online. YouTube plans to expand the program rapidly following the initial pilot phase and has published a new video detailing the tool's functions for eligible users.
