Yelp is repositioning its AI chatbot as a central command center within its app, shifting from a simple search aid to a tool designed for completing tasks. The upgraded Yelp Assistant now aims to function as a digital concierge, answering questions, offering recommendations, and managing bookings in a single chat thread.

The assistant, accessible via a new dedicated tab, represents a substantial expansion. Initially launched last year to connect users with local service professionals, it now integrates with third-party services to handle a wider array of actions. Users can order food for delivery through partners like DoorDash, request quotes from auto or pet care providers, and book appointments for services ranging from haircuts to doctor's visits through integrations with Vagaro and Zocdoc. Support for joining Yelp Waitlists and scheduling via Calendly is planned for the near future.

This update is part of Yelp's ongoing effort to leverage its vast database of user reviews and business information. The goal is to create a more dynamic and useful platform where searching transitions directly into scheduling or purchasing. Craig Saldanha, Yelp's Chief Product Officer, called this the company's most substantial AI advancement to date, signaling a move toward more conversational and personalized user interactions. The strategy reflects a wider industry trend of transforming static information platforms into proactive, transaction-enabled services.
