World model companies are keeping their plans close to the chest, and it shows no sign of changing soon.

The field's biggest names, Yann LeCun's AMI Labs and Fei-Fei Li's World Labs, have drawn plenty of buzz and funding while ranking low on efforts to make money. World models aim to automate spatial intelligence, with possible uses in robotics, interactive video and self-driving systems.

Yet when pressed on commercialization, answers dry up. AMI co-founder Michael Rabbat said on a conference panel, "We'll talk about it when we're ready to talk about it," later adding by email that the company is still in a research and building phase with no public product plans or timeline.

That secrecy reaches suppliers too. Alex de Vigan, CEO of data supplier Physicl, said he knows his data has been useful but remains in the dark about what is being built. "I wish they would tell us more," he said.

The mystery partly stems from how versatile the idea is. A navigable map of the world, similar to models powering self-driving cars, could also guide a humanoid robot or turn video footage into an explorable environment. AMI has touched manufacturing, biomedicine, robotics and AI software for doctors through its Nabia partnership.

As long as fundraising stays easy, there is little pressure to pick one path. Announcing a product early could invite competition from rival labs, neolabs, OpenAI and Anthropic. Even if that competition is inevitable, delaying it makes sense, which means staying quiet about what you are building.
