Large language models like ChatGPT and Claude excel at processing text, but they stumble when it comes to understanding how objects move through space and time. That limitation is a major hurdle on the path to artificial general intelligence - the kind of AI that can truly think and adapt like a human. Now, a startup backed by Jeff Bezos is betting that video game data can bridge that gap.
General Intuition, a New York-based company valued at $2.3 billion, just closed a $320 million funding round. The round includes investments from Coatue, Eric Schmidt, and researchers at MIT and Google DeepMind. On a recent episode of TechCrunch's Equity podcast, CEO Pim de Witte explained that gaming data offers a rich, structured environment where AI can learn physics, cause and effect, and real-time decision-making - skills that text-based models lack.
De Witte also discussed how General Intuition spun out of Medal TV, a gaming clip platform, and addressed the ethical questions surrounding defense applications of its technology. The company's approach is gaining traction as researchers increasingly look beyond traditional datasets for the next leap in physical AI.
