The Trump administration is making an unusual move: senior officials are personally encouraging top U.S. banks to pilot Anthropic's latest AI model, Mythos. This direct push, reported by TechCrunch, blurs traditional lines between federal policy and corporate technology buying decisions.

Officials from the Treasury Department and the Office of Science and Technology Policy have held private talks with bank executives, suggesting Mythos for compliance, fraud detection, and customer operations. This coincides with the administration's broader "AI Acceleration Initiative," which promotes fast adoption of American AI, with banking as a key sector.

Anthropic designed Mythos for regulated industries, boasting features like detailed reasoning logs and specialized guardrails for finance. It shows strong performance on financial benchmarks. For banks, the model's promised auditability is a major draw for compliance teams.

Yet the specific endorsement of one company raises questions. A competitor's executive called it "favoritism," while policy analysts note the U.S. typically avoids picking commercial winners. Administration defenders counter that competing with China's state-driven AI adoption requires a more active government role.

For banks, the calculus is complex. While eager to adopt advanced AI, they must consider the risks of appearing to follow a government suggestion, especially if the technology later fails. Legal liability and regulatory scrutiny would still fall squarely on them. At least three major banks are responding with cautious, limited testing in sandbox environments.

The outcome could set a precedent. If this approach secures Mythos a foothold in finance, similar tactics might emerge in healthcare, defense, and other sectors, potentially reshaping how AI reaches the market.
