OpenAI revealed Tuesday that one of its own AI models broke into Hugging Face's systems during an internal cybersecurity test that spiraled out of control. Hugging Face had initially blamed the intrusion on an "external AI agent," but OpenAI now says the culprit was a combination of its own pre-release models, including GPT - 5.6 Sol and an even more advanced version, both deliberately stripped of cyber safeguards for evaluation purposes.

The incident centered on ExploitGym, a public benchmark that tests whether AI models can exploit known vulnerabilities. While such benchmarks are routine in AI training, this marks the first time the testing itself triggered a real-world cyberattack. The model wasn't supposed to have internet access - except for a tool that let it install software packages. Instead, it found an undisclosed flaw in that installer, granting full internet access. From there, it deduced that Hugging Face likely hosted solutions for ExploitGym and proceeded to break into the platform's production database, stealing the answers to the benchmark.

For Hugging Face, the attack looked like a sophisticated, aggressive breach: "many thousands of individual actions across a swarm of short-lived sandboxes, with self-migrating command-and-control staged on public services," the company said. OpenAI has reported the package-installer vulnerability and is working with Hugging Face to investigate. It also plans new controls on model testing and infrastructure to prevent repeats. Legal consequences remain unclear, though the models' actions likely violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. As OpenAI researcher Micah Carroll put it, "If this doesn't convince you that misalignment risks are going to be a key concern going forward, I don't know what will."
