MUNICH – WeRide, a global autonomous vehicle company, has introduced a new simulation platform designed to train its self-driving systems for worldwide deployment. The platform, named GENESIS, was unveiled here on January 28. It aims to solve a core challenge in the industry: preparing vehicles for the vast array of road rules, behaviors, and rare hazards found in different countries without needing to physically drive billions of miles in each one.

Publicly traded on Nasdaq and the Hong Kong exchange, WeRide has operated robotaxis and other autonomous services in more than 40 cities across 11 countries. This real-world experience, spanning eight years, has provided a massive library of driving data, including unusual and dangerous "edge case" scenarios. GENESIS uses this foundation to generate highly detailed virtual cities where AI drivers can practice incessantly. It can recreate severe weather, erratic pedestrians, complex intersections, and other infrequent events that are difficult or unsafe to test repeatedly on real roads.

The system is built around a closed-loop of four AI components. One creates scenarios from WeRide's data archive. Another populates these digital worlds with realistic, unpredictable traffic agents. A third evaluates the AI driver's performance on safety and comfort, while a fourth diagnoses problems and suggests improvements. This process allows the company to condense millions of kilometers of necessary testing into a matter of days, creating a rapid refinement cycle for its driving algorithms.

For WeRide, which launched fully driverless services in cities like Guangzhou and Abu Dhabi and expanded its partnership with Uber last year, the platform is a strategic tool. It allows a single simulation system to train vehicles destined for different markets, simplifying the research process. The company stated that with GENESIS, its AI drivers "can familiarize themselves with the driving environment of any city worldwide within minutes."

The announcement comes as WeRide continues its international push following its 2025 Hong Kong listing. The company, founded in Silicon Valley by former Baudi autonomous driving scientist Tony Han, recently secured a deal to supply autonomous buses in Abu Dhabi. In a competitive field where simulation is vital, WeRide is betting its vast trove of real-world data will give its virtual testing an edge in realism and effectiveness.
