Waymo has officially opened its driverless taxi service to the public in Nashville, marking the company's eleventh operational city. The launch follows months of meticulous preparation, including manual driving and supervised software testing. A company spokesperson indicated the rollout will be gradual, with invitations sent to riders over time to manage growth and service quality.
Initially, the service will cover a 60-square-mile zone with a fleet described as numbering in the dozens. Notably, Waymo has chosen Lyft as its local partner, a departure from its existing agreements with Uber in other markets. In Nashville, rides will start exclusively on the Waymo app, with integration into the Lyft app planned for a later phase. Lyft's subsidiary, Flexdrive, will manage the physical fleet—handling maintenance, charging, and depot operations.
This structure differs from Waymo's Uber partnership, where users request a ride through Uber with the chance of being paired with a robotaxi. The Nashville model gives riders two potential access points and underscores Waymo's varied approach to market entry. The company partners with fleet managers like Avis in Dallas and Moove in Phoenix, while operating more independently in cities like San Francisco.
Analysts view these partnerships as evidence of Waymo's long-term ambition to position itself as an autonomous technology provider, rather than a full-scale mobility operator. Backed by $16 billion in new capital, the Alphabet-owned company is accelerating its expansion. Its services are now live in major metropolitan areas including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, and Phoenix, with no indication of slowing its geographic push.
