When the White House told Anthropic to cut off access to its latest frontier models over the weekend, the company complied. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 went dark for anyone outside the United States - including Anthropic's own foreign national employees. The message was clear: the country that leads in AI also controls who gets to use it.

That message didn't sit well abroad. In the UK, AI minister Kanishka Narayan argued that dependence on American models is a national security risk. In France, former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal called the move the opening shot of "the AI war," comparing restricted model access to a blockade of a strategic chokepoint. Across Europe, the incident added urgency to long-running calls for homegrown AI capacity.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed the sentiment, warning that overreliance on any single provider - even a trusted ally - leaves nations exposed. "Nobody has done anything wrong in the situation," he said. "But we will have done something wrong if we just accept this, don't take the lesson, don't build out and diversify."

Not every country needs to build a frontier model. France's Mistral and Canada's Cohere prove that focused, competitive AI can emerge outside the US and China. Others, like Singapore and the UAE, are investing in infrastructure or models optimized for local languages. Open-source alternatives also offer a path that no single government can shut off.

Anthropic may restore access to Fable and Mythos soon. But the trust in American AI as a reliable global resource has been damaged. For governments and enterprises watching this unfold, the lesson is simple: owning your AI capability isn't a luxury - it's a strategic imperative.
