Artificial intelligence is not yet ready to take over management of a bank's IT infrastructure, according to Sergei Putyatinsky, advisor to the first deputy president and chairman of VTB's management board. Speaking at the international Kazan Digital Week forum, he said entrusting AI with control of the "heart" of a financial institution is premature, since reliability requirements in this area match those applied to the most dependable infrastructure organizations and systems - especially given the volume of clients and transactions VTB handles.
Putyatinsky pointed to accountability as a key obstacle. Under current conditions, makers of AI algorithms bear no responsibility when someone makes an error while using their technology; that liability falls on the people and organizations operating it. Financial companies, he said, recognize this sharply and cannot delegate it - the financial organization answers for wrong decisions and actions involving money.
He therefore urged a careful, conservative approach to AI in areas affecting stability, financial decisions and client funds. AI can already be trusted with mass operational processes such as client communications, where language models analyze and summarize large volumes of information faster and better than people.
The results show in speed: work that once took a client manager time to research and compile now takes AI seven seconds, and property valuation in the lending process has dropped from up to three days to under 30 seconds. Kazan Digital Week runs October 29-31 in Kazan, held annually since 2020 with support from Russia's Ministry of Digital Development and the government of Tatarstan.
