In a significant development for gamers, Valve has confirmed that it is collaborating with Intel and Nvidia to bring SteamOS to a wider range of GPUs. This move is expected to enhance the gaming experience on handheld devices, such as MSI's Claw gaming handhelds, which have traditionally been Windows-based. According to Valve, the company has added initial firmware for upcoming Intel handhelds and controller support for certain MSI Claw devices in its latest SteamOS 3. 8 update.
Some users, including YouTuber ETA Prime, have already successfully installed SteamOS on Intel-powered devices, with generally positive results. Valve's Pierre-Loup Griffais revealed that the company is working closely with Intel to optimize the graphics stack and ensure a seamless experience. While Intel has been more cautious about sharing a timeline for SteamOS support on its Panther Lake architecture, the company acknowledged the demand for Linux support and confirmed that it is working on the Mesa driver and collaborating with Valve. Additionally, Valve is also working with Nvidia to expand SteamOS compatibility, although support for Nvidia hardware may not be available until next year.
With these partnerships, Valve aims to enable users to build their own SteamOS-powered desktops, starting with the SteamOS 3. 8 release, and potentially opening up new possibilities for gamers and developers alike.
