The Energy Information Administration (EIA) will soon compel data center operators to report detailed information on their electricity consumption. This move follows a formal request last month from Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who urged the agency to address the sector's rapidly growing draw on the national power grid.
According to a report from Wired, the agency confirmed to the senators that it intends to launch a mandatory, nationwide survey. While an official start date is not yet set, the EIA is already laying the groundwork. Earlier this year, the agency initiated two pilot surveys: one targeting 196 companies in Texas, Washington state, and the Northern Virginia data hub, and a second in three other states.
EIA head Tristan Abbey anticipates these pilots will conclude in September. The findings will directly inform the development of the comprehensive federal questionnaire. This planned mandate signals a significant shift for an industry often scrutinized for its environmental footprint but not previously subject to systematic federal energy reporting. For business leaders, the coming transparency will provide clearer insight into the operational costs and sustainability profiles of the digital infrastructure underpinning the modern economy.
