Travelers Companies Inc. is now in the midst of a sweeping technological transformation, with more than 20,000 of its employees using artificial intelligence tools in their daily work. The shift, detailed by CEO Alan Schnitzer, follows a major January 2026 partnership with AI firm Anthropic to provide personalized Claude assistants to nearly 10,000 technical staff.
The company's decade-long, multi-billion dollar tech investment is showing clear financial results. In 2025, Travelers handled a staggering 1.5 million claims, making a payment roughly every 20 seconds. Over half of those claims are now eligible for fully automated processing, a key driver behind a one-third reduction in claims call center staff and the consolidation of four centers into two.
Schnitzer framed this as 'Innovation 2.0,' a phase powered by AI and built on years of groundwork. The numbers support the strategy: the company's underlying combined ratio—a key measure of profitability—has improved by nearly 8 points since 2016. In 2025, net income rose 26% and underwriting income jumped 40% to $3.4 billion.
Internally, the Anthropic deal aims to accelerate software development and analytics. Early tests, according to Chief Technology Officer Mojgan Lefebvre, have already shown 'meaningful improvements in productivity.' The tools are part of Travelers' broader TravAI platform, now used by over 30,000 employees globally.
For customers, the changes are manifesting in faster service. A new AI voice agent for reporting claims has seen adoption rates exceed expectations, and 90% of catastrophe claims were closed within 30 days last year. Underwriters, meanwhile, are using AI to cut the average handling time for renewals by 30%, allowing them to focus on more complex risk assessments.
As the industry watches, Travelers is making a substantial bet that its deep insurance expertise, combined with AI scale, will define its competitive edge for years to come.
