A Tokyo-based startup founded by veterans of Waymo and SpaceX has secured $42 million in its earliest funding round to construct autonomous cargo ships. Mirai Robotics announced the pre-seed financing, a notably large sum for a maritime technology company at this stage, led by Andreessen Horowitz with participation from Lux Capital, Founders Fund, and shipping industry investors.

The company's leadership brings expertise from three distinct fields. CEO Yuki Tanaka worked on perception systems at Waymo, CTO James Chen developed navigation software for SpaceX's Starship, and co-founder Maria Santos led autonomous systems research at Rolls-Royce Marine. Their plan is to build new vessels from the keel up, designed specifically for autonomy, rather than retrofitting existing ships.

Mirai's initial ships, ranging from 50 to 200 meters, are intended for coastal routes. They will operate without crew, monitored from a remote operations center in Tokyo. The company argues this approach addresses a critical shortage of seafarers and reduces the high operational costs tied to crewed short-sea shipping.

Significant regulatory and technical challenges remain. While Japan has been proactive with autonomous ship trials, international rules from the International Maritime Organization are still evolving. Mirai aims to begin sea trials in Japanese waters by late next year, targeting commercial service by 2027.

The funding will finance a prototype vessel, an expanded engineering team, and the Tokyo operations center. For investors, the bet is that automating maritime transport, a sector responsible for moving most of the world's trade, represents a multi-billion dollar opportunity waiting for a new approach.
