This isn't a forecast of more efficient teams, but a fundamental rethinking of how value is created. The idea hinges on autonomous AI systems—software that performs multi-step tasks from coding to logistics—acting as a full workforce.

This vision is being actively constructed. In China, startup OpenClaw is developing a platform to let one founder direct a team of AI agents managing development, marketing, and supply chains. The model extends beyond startups. Established players are pushing similar technology. OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google have all introduced agent capabilities designed to execute tasks, not just offer suggestions. If AI can reliably draft contracts, manage payments, and run campaigns, the foundational need for large human departments weakens. Liability, regulatory compliance, and public trust in faceless systems are unresolved. The social implications of widespread job displacement would be profound.

Alibaba, OpenAI, and others are building the infrastructure for this agent-driven era, betting that the next generation of dominant software will be systems that act autonomously.
