The notion of building AI data centers in space is gaining traction, particularly in the wake of SpaceX's successful IPO. With its reliable and reusable Falcon rockets, as well as its Starlink internet service, SpaceX is poised to bring its vision of space-based data centers to life. The company's xAI requires immense compute power, and its satellites can be upgraded to meet this demand. Investors believe that SpaceX has no choice but to make this concept work in order to justify its public market valuations.
Duncan Davidson, a partner at Bullpen Capital, notes that the technical issues are being solved, but the economic viability is still uncertain. However, with the increasing constraints on terrestrial data centers, including practical, political, and public concerns, launching them into low-earth orbit is becoming a more viable option. SpaceX has filed an application with the FCC for a constellation of up to one million satellites, which would be the foundation for an orbital AI data center. Other players, including Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Alphabet, are also exploring similar initiatives.
While there are still significant challenges to overcome, the prospect of launching AI data centers into space is no longer considered science fiction. As technology continues to advance and launch costs decrease, the idea of space-based data centers is becoming increasingly plausible. According to Harvard economist Mark Weinzierl, the fundamental economic question remains whether it's possible to achieve cost competitiveness with terrestrial data centers. While the current business models may not be cost-competitive, it's reasonable to predict that the costs of doing it in space will come down over time, making it a viable option in the future.
