The core problem is one of sheer volume. The average person encounters thousands of complex, ever-changing privacy policies annually—documents no individual can reasonably parse. Human-led enforcement and compliance cannot keep up. Cranor and Sadeh propose a shift: deploy AI agents that act as automated advocates. These systems would read policies, interpret terms against a user's preferences, and manage data-sharing settings in real time.
This isn't speculative. Their Usable Privacy Project has developed machine learning models that analyze privacy documents with near-legal accuracy, identifying data-sharing practices and retention rules. The rise of large language models makes this application more viable than past failed attempts like the P3P standard.
The timing aligns with a global patchwork of new regulations, from the GDPR to California's laws, creating a compliance maze for companies and confusion for users. Significant hurdles remain, primarily around incentive. Major data-collecting platforms benefit from user friction and opaque settings. The proposal also navigates a recursive risk: a privacy AI must understand your preferences, which requires data access. Techniques like differential privacy and federated learning, already in use by companies like Apple and Google, offer pathways to mitigate this by training models without centralizing sensitive information.
