Big tech is racing to spend a trillion dollars annually on AI by 2027. But as massive data centers spark backlash - Maine nearly banned them, and 14 other states are considering restrictions - a counter-trend is emerging: tiny data centers designed for homes.

Homebuilders like PulteGroup are already testing wall-mounted compute nodes with Nvidia and startup Span. The pitch is simple: homeowners host a small server, get free hot water or discounted electricity, and companies avoid the land and permitting headaches of hyperscale facilities.

Balaji Tammabattula, COO at energy firm BaRupOn, says the model works for non-time-sensitive tasks like batch processing. A UK startup called Heata even channels server heat into home water heaters. In Finland, Microsoft is routing waste heat from its data centers to warm 250,000 homes.

But don't expect your ChatGPT queries to be answered from a neighbor's closet. High-density AI training still demands industrial power, cooling, and security that residential settings can't provide. "A 20-kilowatt generator doesn't even power one cabinet of AI servers," notes Sean Farney of JLL.

Cybersecurity is another hurdle. "I can't imagine end users being comfortable with sensitive data processed in someone's garage," says Aimee Simpson of Huntress. Physical security, HOA battles, and reliability issues remain significant.

Still, the economics are compelling. Span claims it can deploy 100 megawatts of compute across 8,000 homes in six months at $3 million per megawatt - versus $15 million and three to five years for a traditional data center. For inference workloads, edge gaming, and heat reuse, the home data center could become a profitable niche layer of future infrastructure - even if it won't replace the hyperscalers.
