A fundamental shift is underway in the semiconductor industry, and it will hit consumers in the wallet for years. The unprecedented memory demands of artificial intelligence systems are redirecting global chip production, creating a prolonged shortage for everyday electronics.
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won set the tone in March, telling Reuters the wafer shortage fueled by AI could stretch to 2030. The reason is High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a specialized, high-performance component essential for AI processors. Producing a single bit of HBM consumes three times the silicon wafer space of standard DRAM. As manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron pivot lines to meet this lucrative demand, less capacity remains for the memory in phones, laptops, and gaming consoles.
The numbers tell a stark story. HBM now consumes nearly a quarter of all DRAM wafers. TrendForce data indicates DRAM prices rose over 70% in early 2026. Nikkei Asia reports supply will meet only 60% of total DRAM demand through 2027. This imbalance has tangible effects: Lenovo is raising PC prices, Sony increased tags on the PS5, and memory could soon represent 40% of a budget smartphone's cost, doubling its current share.
While memory makers see soaring profits—Samsung reported an eightfold leap in quarterly profit—the supply chain is locked tight. Data centers are projected to consume 70% of 2026 memory output, with tech giants securing multi-year deals. New fabrication plants take years to build, meaning relief is unlikely before 2027 at the earliest.
The consequence is clear: memory has transformed from a cheap commodity into a strategic bottleneck. The AI boom has rewritten the industry's priorities, and consumers will be covering the tab on their next device purchase.
