In a significant disclosure during its January 28 earnings report, Tesla confirmed it now has 1.1 million active subscribers for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The figure, current as of the end of 2025, represents a 38% increase from the previous year and signals the company's growing reliance on high-margin software revenue as traditional car sales soften.

The growth, from 800,000 subscribers in 2024, came primarily through a monthly subscription model priced at $99. Tesla is phasing out one-time purchases of the system. At the current rate, this subscriber base generates an estimated $1.3 billion in annual revenue. This income stream is becoming increasingly important; the company's automotive deliveries fell 16% in the fourth quarter.

Elon Musk, Tesla's chief executive, has stated the monthly fee will increase as the software's capabilities advance. The ultimate goal is unsupervised operation, where the car drives without requiring the driver's attention. The company's earnings letter described this shift as part of a transition into a "physical AI company."

Investor reaction was mixed, with shares experiencing volatility. Analysts pointed to the potential for growth, as the current subscribers represent only about 12% of all Teslas ever sold. However, challenges remain, including ongoing regulatory probes by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into the system's safety.

The disclosure, previously kept private, now establishes a clear metric for Wall Street to track Tesla's ambitious software strategy. With vehicle trials recently concluded and a focus on monthly subscriptions, the company is betting that lower upfront costs will accelerate adoption and fund the expensive artificial intelligence research required to achieve fully autonomous driving.
