Tesla's Driverless Taxi Prototype Emerges in Austin, Testing 2025 Launch Plan

A wheel-less, pedal-free vehicle was recently filmed navigating the test track at Tesla's Gigafactory Texas in Austin. This prototype, believed to be the long-awaited Cybercab robotaxi, signals a concrete move toward the company's goal of launching a driverless ride-hailing service in the city. The appearance of a physical prototype suggests momentum behind a project many had viewed skeptically. Unlike Tesla's consumer models, the Cybercab is engineered solely for autonomy, with no manual controls. Passengers would select a destination, leaving the driving to the vehicle's AI. Manufacturing the novel design at scale, navigating federal safety standards for vehicles without controls, and settling complex liability questions are all significant hurdles.

For Tesla, the Cybercab represents a pivotal bet.
