Tesla's Cybertruck, the angular electric pickup that arrived with a bang in late 2023, has hit a significant speed bump. New industry data shows its 2025 sales fell roughly 50% from the previous year, a sharp reversal for a vehicle once touted as a market redefiner.
Analysts estimate Tesla sold between 20,000 and 21,500 Cybertrucks globally in 2025, a steep drop from the approximately 40,000 units sold in 2024. The decline accelerated in the final quarter, with U.S. registrations down by 68% from earlier periods. This slowdown occurred even as Tesla's more conventional Model Y continued to dominate electric vehicle sales charts.
Several factors converged to cool demand. The truck's starting price, well over $80,000, proved a barrier as economic pressures grew. Reports of quality control issues, including panel gaps and recalls, circulated among owners and critics. Furthermore, the initial wave of eager early adopters appears to have been exhausted, leaving a more cautious mainstream audience.
The competitive field also intensified. Ford's F-150 Lightning outsold the Cybertruck in 2025, leveraging traditional truck branding, while Rivian's R1T attracted buyers with strong off-road credentials. The Cybertruck's radical design, a major selling point for some, seems to have limited its appeal to a narrower segment of the market.
Internally, Tesla has grappled with the disconnect. The company's dedicated Austin factory has capacity for higher output, but was reportedly underutilized as inventory grew. Tesla, which rarely offers discounts, began providing incentives to move trucks by year's end.
The sales figures stand in stark contrast to Elon Musk's earlier projection of 250,000 annual units. While Musk has emphasized the truck's long-term potential on social media, the 2025 results underscore the challenge of translating a visionary product into sustained commercial success in a rapidly maturing electric vehicle market.
