The tech industry has witnessed a surge in layoffs, with several major companies citing AI adoption as a key factor in their decisions. Oracle recently disclosed that it has reduced its workforce by 21,000 employees over the past 12 months, a decline of 13%, due in part to the adoption and deployment of AI technologies. This trend is not unique to Oracle, as other companies such as GitLab, Google, and Intuit have also announced significant layoffs, with AI playing a role in their decisions. GitLab, for example, laid off roughly 350 workers to fund AI infrastructure investment and handle surging traffic from AI workflows.
Google has quietly cut employees across its Cloud division, even as Cloud revenue grew 63% to exceed $20 billion for the first time. Intuit announced plans to eliminate roughly 3,000 jobs, about 17% of its total workforce, in a restructuring centered on reducing complexity and reallocating resources toward AI. The list of companies citing AI as a reason for layoffs continues to grow, with Meta, Cisco, Cloudflare, and General Motors also making significant cuts. While the exact reasons for these layoffs are complex and multifaceted, it is clear that the increasing adoption of AI is having a profound impact on the tech industry.
As companies continue to invest in AI and automate certain tasks, it is likely that we will see further layoffs and restructuring efforts in the months to come.
