A new coalition of major technology and energy companies is making a case for a fundamental shift in how America’s electrical grid is managed. The group, named Utilize, includes Google, Tesla, data center developer Verrus, HVAC leader Carrier, and several energy technology firms. They argue the current system, built for rare peaks in demand, wastes vast amounts of latent capacity daily.

Utilize contends that existing technologies—such as large-scale battery storage, smart home energy systems, and virtual power plants—can tap into this unused potential to create a more resilient and efficient grid. The coalition points to Texas, where increased battery deployment has helped prevent blackouts during extreme weather, as a practical example.

Despite such successes, regulatory progress has been slow. Many policymakers remain hesitant, favoring traditional centralized power plants over newer, distributed solutions. Utilize plans to advocate for state and federal policies that accelerate adoption of these technologies. Each member has a stake: companies like Tesla and Span provide the hardware and software, while Google and Verrus are massive consumers seeking reliable, clean power for their operations.

The coalition is already noting early influence, citing support from some of its members for a Virginia bill that would require utilities to disclose grid utilization data. While Utilize is not currently registered as a lobbying entity, its formation signals a concerted, long-term effort to reshape energy policy. With electricity demands from data centers and electrification soaring, the group warns that without policy updates now, the grid will struggle to meet future needs.
