Study Warns of 'Concept Drift' as AI Models Quietly Lose Their Way

A new study reveals a troubling flaw in the artificial intelligence systems that corporations have rushed to adopt. The very process used to customize these powerful tools for specific business tasks may be causing them to slowly lose their foundational knowledge and safety programming.

Researchers from the University of Oxford, Google DeepMind, and ETH Zürich have identified and measured this phenomenon, which they term 'fidelity decay.' Their work, published on the academic site Figshare, provides a method to detect how an AI model's grasp of key concepts—from fairness to toxicity—can warp or collapse during routine updates.
