A new study reveals a troubling flaw in the artificial intelligence systems that corporations have rushed to adopt. The very process used to customize these powerful tools for specific business tasks may be causing them to slowly lose their foundational knowledge and safety programming.

Researchers from the University of Oxford, Google DeepMind, and ETH Zürich have identified and measured this phenomenon, which they term 'fidelity decay.' Their work, published on the academic site Figshare, provides a method to detect how an AI model's grasp of key concepts—from fairness to toxicity—can warp or collapse during routine updates. This degradation often occurs even when the new training data is unrelated to the concepts that are fading.

"This gets at a core fear among developers: that in improving models, we might inadvertently break them in subtle ways," said Hal Ashton, an Oxford researcher and study co-author.

The implications are serious for any business using AI. A financial institution tuning a model on internal documents could weaken its understanding of ethical guidelines. A healthcare provider updating a diagnostic assistant might degrade its sensitivity to patient privacy. Without the new diagnostic tools proposed by the researchers, companies might only discover these failures after a public incident or regulatory action.

The findings suggest that maintaining AI will require more than occasional updates. It demands continuous monitoring of a model's conceptual integrity, transforming AI from a deployed product into a system requiring perpetual, careful oversight. For an industry investing billions, the central challenge is now clear: ensuring these powerful systems do not quietly forget their purpose.
