A new study challenges the prevailing narrative that artificial intelligence simply lightens the load for employees. Research published in the Harvard Business Review by teams from Boston Consulting Group and the University of California indicates that for many, AI tools are complicating work, not streamlining it.
The investigation, which surveyed nearly 1,500 U.S. professionals, identified a phenomenon researchers term "AI brain fry." Fourteen percent of respondents reported this specific mental fatigue, stemming from overuse or excessive oversight of AI systems. Symptoms include a persistent mental fog, headaches, impaired focus, and slower decision-making - a condition some described as a "mental hangover."
This strain carries tangible business risks. Those experiencing AI brain fry reported 33% more decision fatigue and were roughly 40% more likely to intend to leave their jobs. They also self-reported making nearly 40% more major errors with serious potential consequences.
The pressure to adopt AI is palpable in some sectors. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, for instance, has dismissed engineers reluctant to use AI and set ambitious targets for AI-generated code. The study warns that measuring performance by the volume of AI use, rather than outcomes, promotes waste and low-quality work.
However, the findings aren't universally negative. The research identified a crucial distinction: when AI automates truly repetitive and routine tasks, it works as intended. Employees using AI for this purpose reported burnout levels 15% lower than peers who did not.
The researchers conclude that corporate leaders must define a clear, strategic purpose for AI adoption, communicate how roles will evolve, and focus on measurable results rather than mere usage metrics to prevent this new form of workplace exhaustion.
