Stripe confirmed it is acquiring OpenRouter, though the exact price was not disclosed. Sources told the New York Times that the deal is worth $7.5 billion, a major jump from OpenRouter's $1.3 billion valuation in May. According to the NYT, the founders alone will reportedly receive $1.5 billion from the sale, with investors getting the remaining $6 billion. Stripe reportedly outbid other interested parties, including Databricks.
The big question is why a payments company wants a startup that routes prompts between different AI models. A leaked letter from Stripe's founders to investors, published by Eric Newcomer and verified by TechCrunch, jokingly mentions the singularity. They wrote that they decided January 1 marked the beginning of the singularity and have been operating on that basis. The singularity, in theory, is when humans and technology merge into a new species. This is clearly a tongue-in-cheek reference, as Patrick Collison admitted when using the term at a conference in April.
The founders do point to the economic boost AI is bringing to Stripe. More companies are launching with AI and using Stripe's tools. Stripe says 88% of the Forbes AI 50 use its products, including OpenAI and Anthropic, as do 100% of Brex's fastest-growing startups. The founders also note that OpenRouter is useful for developers, and Stripe is one of the world's largest developer platforms. OpenRouter says it will continue to operate independently after the deal closes in a few weeks.
Historically, Stripe's big acquisitions have focused on helping businesses collect and manage incoming cash. Buying OpenRouter suggests a move toward expense management, specifically for AI costs. PitchBook analyst Franco Granda called it Stripe's deliberate attempt to embed itself in the middle of capital flows in the AI era. Other companies, like Databricks, Rippling, and Ramp, are also launching AI gateways or expense tools. For Stripe, owning OpenRouter gives it insight into how developers use AI and some degree of power over suppliers like frontier labs and hyperscalers. It may not be the Borg, but combining payments with token expense management and a model router gives Stripe considerable influence.
