The city of Starbase, Texas, is taking another major step toward self-governance. Less than a year after incorporating, the municipality adjacent to SpaceX's primary launch facility has submitted an ordinance to create its own municipal court. The proposal calls for a part-time judge, prosecutor, and court clerk, with the mayor serving as judge until a formal appointment is made next month.
This move follows a pattern of rapid development for the community of roughly 580 residents. Starbase already operates a volunteer fire department, manages its own building permits and inspections, and is actively forming an independent police department after plans to contract with county deputies dissolved. Officials estimate the police force will be operational within six months.
The push for local control is driven by practical needs. According to an application filed with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, Starbase recorded 420 calls for law enforcement service in 2025. The document states the remote Cameron County location requires faster, more reliable responses than the county sheriff's office can guarantee, a point of concern for residents and leadership.
The city's application also highlights its unique circumstances: a mix of aerospace industry, coastal location, and rising property values that fuel demand for high-quality services. It notes that SpaceX launch operations, which are projected to intensify, bring significant tourism and require the city to protect the integrity of spaceflight activities within its jurisdiction. With over 7,000 vehicles daily on the main highway and hundreds of crashes noted last year, establishing robust local institutions has become a clear priority for the burgeoning city.
