In a move to support its Starship program, SpaceX is set to construct a natural gas pipeline in Texas, spanning eight miles from the Port of Brownsville to its Starbase facility. According to recent filings, the pipeline project is slated to commence next month and is expected to be operational by January 26. The 16-inch pipeline will supply natural gas to Starbase, where it will be converted into liquid methane to fuel Starship launches. This development comes as SpaceX aims to increase its launch frequency, currently approved for up to 25 launches annually.
The company has launched Starship 12 times since its inaugural flight in April 2023, with each launch requiring approximately 630,000 gallons of liquid methane, previously transported by tanker trucks. The planned pipeline has raised environmental concerns, given the sensitive wetland habitats surrounding Starbase. Additionally, land records indicate that SpaceX has explored drilling in the area and other parts of Texas, potentially leading to further ecological impact. As the project progresses, the company's efforts to balance its ambitious space exploration goals with environmental responsibilities will be closely watched.
