In a historic move, SpaceX has become one of the fastest companies to join the prestigious Nasdaq-100 index, just weeks after its highly anticipated public debut. The decision, announced by Nasdaq after Friday's market close, paves the way for a surge in buying activity from index-tracking funds and other investors. With over $800 billion in assets tracking the Nasdaq-100, including the widely followed Invesco QQQ Trust, SpaceX's inclusion is expected to generate significant demand for its shares. The company will officially join the index on July 7, with a weighting of less than 1%.
This rapid inclusion is made possible by Nasdaq's new fast-track framework, which allows large IPOs to enter the index after just 15 trading days. Previously, investors had to wait months to gain exposure to newly listed companies. The move is likely to boost SpaceX's stock, which has already been one of the most actively traded since its June 12 debut. As index funds and ETFs rebalance their portfolios to match the Nasdaq-100's new composition, they will need to purchase SpaceX shares, potentially driving up demand and prices.
Notably, SpaceX's small publicly tradable float compared to its market capitalization means that even a modest index weighting could require substantial purchases from passive investors. This development comes as S&P Dow Jones Indices has opted not to adopt a similar fast-track process for the S&P 500, leaving SpaceX ineligible for inclusion in that index due to its separate requirements.
