Sony has long dominated the image sensor market, supplying the chips inside iPhones, Pixels, and even high-end cameras from Nikon and Leica. But as sensors grow more complex with stacked architectures, the company is turning to the world’s largest chipmaker for help. Sony and TSMC are forming a joint venture at Sony’s new facility in Koshi City, Japan, where Sony will lead the project but lean on TSMC’s process technology and manufacturing expertise. The move is part of CEO Hiroki Totoki’s broader strategy to shift Sony toward a “fab-light” model, reducing its reliance on in-house production and focusing more on intellectual property.
Sony has already exited TV manufacturing, handing its Bravia division to TCL. Now, with image sensors becoming trickier to produce, Totoki sees TSMC as the muscle needed to stay ahead. Both companies are also seeking financial incentives from the Japanese government. The partnership could accelerate next-generation sensors for cameras, vehicles, and other applications.
But there’s a risk: other sensor buyers, like Nikon or DJI, might bypass Sony and go straight to TSMC for their future needs.
