Snap Inc. is reducing its global workforce by approximately 1,000 employees, a move representing 16% of its staff. In a memo to employees, CEO Evan Spiegel linked the restructuring directly to the company's adoption of artificial intelligence tools. The decision also includes the elimination of over 300 open positions.
Spiegel described the layoffs as necessary to position Snap for net-income profitability, projecting annual cost savings exceeding $500 million by late 2026. Impacted U.S. and Canadian employees received notification remotely, as the company asked its North American teams to work from home. Departing staff will receive a four-month severance package along with continued healthcare coverage.
The CEO's rationale centered on AI's capacity to change how work is done. Spiegel stated that small teams using AI have already accelerated progress on key projects, including the Snapchat+ subscription service, advertising platform enhancements, and infrastructure for the lighter-weight Snap Lite app. He framed the technology not as a direct replacement for people, but as a means to reduce repetitive tasks and increase the pace of development.
This marks the most significant reduction at Snap since a 20% cut in 2022, continuing a pattern of workforce adjustments over the past three years. The move aligns with similar efficiency-driven restructurings at other major technology firms, including Amazon and Microsoft, which have also pointed to AI integration. The layoffs come as Snap prepares to launch a consumer version of its Spectacles augmented reality glasses and recently established the Spectacles brand as a separate business unit.
