In a move to capitalize on the surging demand for AI-driven memory chips, South Korea's largest chipmaker, SK Hynix, is planning to raise approximately $29 billion through a Nasdaq listing. The company intends to issue 17. 79 million new shares, valued at 45. 45 trillion won, and expects to start trading on July 10, although the dates are subject to change.
By expanding its investor base through the American depositary receipts (ADRs) listing, SK Hynix aims to increase its global presence, particularly in the US, a hub for AI technological innovation. The company is rapidly expanding its operations to meet the soaring demand for AI, including the construction of a massive new campus in South Korea and a $4 billion packaging plant in Indiana. With a significant market share of around 60% in the high bandwidth memory (HBM) market, SK Hynix is well-positioned to benefit from the global memory shortage caused by the increasing demand for high-performance AI systems. The company's shares have already seen a significant surge of over 280% this year, with its market capitalization exceeding $1 trillion.
The Nasdaq listing is being managed by a consortium of major banks, including BofA Securities, Citigroup Global Markets, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan Securities. As the demand for HBM chips continues to grow, SK Hynix's listing is expected to further solidify its position as a leading player in the industry.
