From the World Economic Forum in Davos, Scale AI’s interim CEO Jason Droege delivered a clear-eyed forecast: 2026 will be the year the artificial intelligence industry confronts its results. In an exclusive interview with CNBC, Droege detailed a banner 2025 for the company, which saw annual revenue double on the strength of more than $1 billion in new bookings. This surge came despite the high-profile departure of founder Alexandr Wang to Meta Platforms the previous year and widespread questions about the sector's sustainability.
Promoted from chief strategy officer, Droege has steered Scale from its roots in data labeling toward building complete AI applications for major corporations and the U.S. government. '2025 was a significant year,' Droege stated, pointing to Meta’s $14 billion investment—which valued Scale at over $29 billion—and a fourth quarter that was the company’s most profitable ever.
The firm’s strategy hinges on a hands-on, practical approach. Teams of Scale experts are embedded with clients such as BP, the Mayo Clinic, and Allianz to identify and solve specific, manageable problems where AI can deliver immediate returns. For the Defense Department, this has meant shifting from data services to creating AI tools that assist with complex, manual operational planning.
Droege’s message from Davos drew a sharp distinction between industry hype and tangible value. He predicted that by next year’s forum, a clear separation will emerge between companies making promises and those producing results. With a major U.S. Army contract and a series of high-profile enterprise partnerships, Scale AI is betting its record growth proves it belongs in the latter category as the industry enters a pivotal phase.
