In a significant move to bolster its presence in the cryptocurrency market, Japanese financial services giant SBI Holdings has agreed to acquire Bitbank, one of Japan's top 10 largest crypto exchanges, for approximately $289 million. This strategic acquisition is part of SBI's broader plan to expand its crypto business, anticipating potential regulatory developments in Japan. The country is on the verge of bringing cryptocurrencies under the regulatory umbrella of financial products, a move that could come into effect as early as the next fiscal year. Bitbank, with a 24-hour trading volume of nearly $50 million, joins SBI's portfolio, which already includes crypto exchange Bitpoint, acquired in 2022.
The acquisition, subject to regulatory approval, is slated to close in October. This development comes at a time when combined exchange volumes have fallen to their lowest since September 2024, at $4. 41 trillion, marking a 3. 45% decrease.
However, RWA perpetual futures volumes have seen a 10. 4% increase, reaching an all-time high. SBI's move underscores the growing interest of traditional financial institutions in the cryptocurrency sector, positioning themselves for potential growth as regulatory frameworks evolve.
