Sberbank Executive: AI Control is a Human Responsibility

In a recent interview, Alexander Vedyakhin, First Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board at Sberbank, addressed a core tension in modern technology: the fear of artificial intelligence operating beyond human oversight. His position was direct. AI, he stated, will only slip from our control if we explicitly design systems that allow it to happen. The responsibility, therefore, rests entirely with its creators and regulators.

Vedyakhin pointed to the work of Russia's AI Alliance, established in 2019, which includes Sberbank, Yandex, VK, and Gazprom Neft. The consortium has developed a foundational 'white paper' on artificial intelligence that outlines potential risk scenarios and proposes structured responses. The central challenge, as he described it, is balancing innovation with security. The objective is to engineer reliable mechanisms for maintaining control under any circumstances, making this a top priority.

However, Vedyakhin cautioned against an overly restrictive approach. He argued that while development must be tightly managed, progress should not be stifled by excessive caution. The path forward, in his view, requires a disciplined framework where advancement continues, but never autonomously from human direction. The task is to build systems that are both powerful and permanently answerable to their operators.
