Samsung is quietly engineering a shift in how families monitor well-being, using common household appliances as its sensors. A forthcoming update to its SmartThings platform, tied to the Galaxy S26 series, will allow family members to receive discreet alerts about a relative's daily patterns—like first morning activity or changes in movement—before a call is placed.
The system, dubbed Care on Call, leverages millimeter-wave radar and sound sensors built into newer Samsung TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, and even a specific robot vacuum model. This hardware can infer activities like sleeping or working. Data is processed locally on a SmartThings hub, a design Samsung emphasizes for privacy. One feature, Reassurance Patrol, can direct the vacuum to investigate prolonged inactivity, using its camera to check for falls and enabling two-way communication.
Further analysis tracks environmental data and behavioral patterns from Galaxy devices, looking for deviations that may signal health changes. Executive Vice President Jaeyeon Jung states the technology aims to provide "greater peace of mind" for families.
However, the approach is not without significant questions. It requires explicit, ongoing consent from the person being monitored, raising complex scenarios around family pressure and cognitive capacity. The accuracy of its health-related alerts, such as for early signs of cognitive decline, has not been publicly validated through clinical trials.
Samsung competes in a space where Amazon, Google, and Apple also offer senior safety features. Analysts note Samsung's potential advantage lies in its vast array of integrated appliances, but adoption faces hurdles like technical complexity and comfort with in-home monitoring. The success of this ambitious vision will depend on transparent consent, proven reliability, and a delicate balance between care and intrusion.
