Samsung's New Phone Feature Aims to Prevent Wireless Charging Mishaps

A recent software update for Samsung Galaxy phones contains code for a significant, unannounced safety upgrade. Buried within the system, developers have found evidence of a "Foreign Material Detection" feature designed to tackle a common risk of wireless charging.

The system, discovered through an analysis by Android Authority, would allow the phone itself to detect when a metal object like a coin or key is left between the device and a charging pad. Such objects can overheat rapidly, potentially damaging the phone or creating a fire hazard. According to the code, the phone would not only alert the user with a notification but also automatically pause charging to prevent damage.

This move represents a strategic shift in safety responsibility. While wireless charging standards require pads to have detection capabilities, their effectiveness varies, especially with cheaper, third-party accessories.
