Samsung Electronics announced Thursday it has started mass-producing its latest High Bandwidth Memory (HBM4) chips, a pivotal step in the intensifying competition to supply the semiconductor industry's most sought-after component for artificial intelligence systems. The move positions Samsung to supply memory for a new wave of AI accelerators expected from companies like Nvidia and AMD in the coming year.

This production start is a strategic play for Samsung, which has conceded significant market share in the specialized HBM sector to its domestic rival, SK Hynix, over the past two years. SK Hynix secured a dominant position by supplying the current-generation HBM3E memory found in leading AI hardware. Samsung's own challenges in meeting Nvidia's performance standards for that generation resulted in missed opportunities during a period of explosive demand.

HBM4 represents a technical leap, with a fundamental redesign that doubles the data pathway width compared to its predecessor. Samsung's version utilizes a stack of 12 memory dies, requiring advanced packaging and thermal management to function. This architecture is essential for next-generation AI, where training massive models requires moving enormous datasets at unprecedented speeds between processors and memory.

The market for this advanced memory is projected to grow dramatically this decade, with nearly all production currently based in South Korea. This geographic concentration has drawn attention from governments seeking to secure their AI hardware supply chains.

For Samsung, successfully ramping up HBM4 production is about more than reclaiming memory market leadership. It is a test of the company's ability to execute at the cutting edge of semiconductor technology, with implications for its broader business and the pace of AI development itself.
