Russia Probes Apple's Compliance with Local Legislation Amid App Store Removals

The Russian Ministry of Digital Development has requested the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) to investigate Apple's adherence to Russian laws. This move comes after Apple removed several VK-owned services, including VK Video, VK Music, and VK Messenger, from its App Store without warning. The removal has sparked concerns about Apple's reliability and potential unfair competition. According to the Ministry, Apple's actions may be seen as a manifestation of unfair competition, prioritizing foreign platforms over Russian interests.

The Ministry also noted that Apple has not fulfilled requirements to provide a default search engine option and pre-install a Russian app store on its devices. The VK company confirmed the removal, calling Apple's actions unmotivated and unacceptable. Russian President's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, stated that the removal raises questions about Apple's trustworthiness and reliability. Russian authorities will be seeking clarification from Apple regarding the removal of VK apps.

The investigation will examine Apple's compliance with Russian antimonopoly legislation and its impact on local users.
