Russia Plans Nuclear Power Station on the Moon by Mid-2030s

Russia aims to build its first nuclear power plant on the Moon by the middle of the next decade, according to Alexei Likhachev, head of Rosatom. He described the goal as creating an "alien station" powered by a nuclear energy unit, speaking during a tour for foreign scientists at the Atom museum at VDNKh.

Likhachev has previously said the station would have a capacity of at least five kilowatts and operate for up to ten years. Vladimir Koshlakov, head of the Mstislav Keldysh Research Center, has noted that digital twins are planned for the future lunar nuclear plant.

In December 2025, Roscosmos signed a state contract with NPO Lavochkin for work through 2036 on the lunar power station, intended in part for long-term power supply to lunar rovers and observatories in Russia's lunar program. The project was called an important step toward a permanently operating Russian scientific station on the Moon. The work is expected to include developing spacecraft, ground-based experimental testing, flight tests and deployment of infrastructure on the lunar surface.
