Runway, the artificial intelligence company known for its video generation tools, has raised $315 million in a Series E funding round. The investment values the startup at $5.3 billion, a significant increase from its previous valuation.
The capital will fuel the company's ambitious push into developing more advanced 'world models.' These AI systems are designed to build internal simulations of environments, enabling them to predict and plan for future scenarios. In a blog post, Runway stated the funds will help it "pre-train the next generation of world models and bring them to new products and industries." The company released its first such model last December and now sees the technology as key to addressing complex problems in medicine, climate science, and robotics.
While Runway's roots are in media and advertising—bolstered by a partnership with Adobe—company representatives note growing interest from the gaming and robotics sectors. This strategic expansion occurs as competition heats up, with rivals like Google DeepMind and Fei-Fei Li's World Labs also releasing public world models.
The funding follows the successful launch of Runway's Gen 4.5 video model, which creates high-definition clips from text and includes sophisticated audio, editing, and character consistency features. Industry analysts point to Gen 4.5's performance, which has surpassed similar offerings from Google and OpenAI in benchmark tests, as a likely catalyst for strong investor confidence.
To support this computationally demanding work, Runway recently expanded its infrastructure through a deal with cloud provider CoreWeave. The company plans to use the new investment to grow its team of approximately 140 employees across research, engineering, and sales divisions. The round was led by General Atlantic, with participation from Nvidia, Fidelity, Adobe Ventures, and others.
