Report: Apple Exploring AI Server With M-Series Ultra Chips

Apple is reportedly developing an AI server that would rely on its high-performance M-series Ultra chips, the same silicon found in Mac desktops. According to The Information, the project could launch as early as 2029, which would make it Apple's first server in nearly two decades.

The enterprise server is said to come in two configurations, using either two or four future M8 Ultra chips. The project reportedly gained backing from John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, when it began a year ago.

The report comes as Apple's Mac mini and Mac Studio see strong sales among AI developers. The Information noted that AI companies, including OpenAI, have bought tens of thousands of these Macs for reinforcement learning work, while Anthropic has rented Mac minis from Amazon Web Services.

Neither Apple nor the outlets cited have confirmed the server project, and details about the chips and timeline remain unverified.
