Render, a cloud infrastructure startup, announced a $100 million funding round on Tuesday, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. The investment signals strong confidence in platforms that simplify software deployment, especially as artificial intelligence begins to generate more code.
Founded in 2018, the San Francisco-based company reports its revenue has more than doubled. Over 4.5 million developers now use its tools, according to co-founder and CEO Anurag Goel. The new capital will fund technical hires to expand its feature set.
Render currently operates its service atop Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. However, it is experimenting with running its own servers, a move Goel says offers more control and a different cost structure. While managing its own hardware introduces operational complexity, success could mean greater efficiency and potential savings for clients like Shopify, CBS, and AI app builder Base44.
The shift away from legacy services has worked in Render's favor. Following Salesforce's recent decision to halt new feature development for its Heroku platform, many developers have sought alternatives. 'They're looking around for the most mature option,' Goel noted.
AI itself is driving significant growth. OpenAI uses Render for deployments from its Codex tool, and Goel credits AI chatbots with directly boosting business. 'Chatbots have effectively, almost singlehandedly, grown our business,' he said, referring to instances where tools like ChatGPT suggest Render to users.
Base44 founder Maor Shlomo, now both a customer and an investor after his company was acquired, summarized the appeal: 'It's such a great product that we don't need someone focused only on Render.'
