In a significant expansion of its business, Qualcomm has unveiled the Dragonfly C1000, a central processing unit designed for data centers, with a focus on efficient computing performance. The company has also announced that Meta will be the first major customer to utilize this new CPU when production begins in 2028. This move marks Qualcomm's aggressive push into the data center market, leveraging its expertise in creating power-efficient chips for smartphones and PCs. According to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, the company has built a comprehensive portfolio to target the rapidly growing data center market, including an AI chip and a product that integrates multiple chips.
The Dragonfly C1000 is specifically designed for agentic AI, which requires high computing performance without excessive power consumption. Qualcomm's entry into the data center market is timely, as experts predict that central processors will take on a larger workload due to the increasing use of AI agents. The company's CFO, Akash Palkhiwala, notes that Qualcomm already has existing relationships with nearly every hyperscaler through its smartphone chips and other products, which will facilitate its expansion into the data center market. With this move, Qualcomm aims to diversify its business beyond smartphones, which have been its primary focus, and tap into faster-growing markets such as cars, robots, and data centers.
