A new investigation into Android applications using artificial intelligence has uncovered a systemic privacy failure. Dozens of popular AI tools are sending users' most personal information to remote servers with weak or no encryption, according to cybersecurity research first detailed by Mashable. The study indicates that the rapid integration of AI into consumer software has left security measures dangerously behind.

Researchers analyzed more than 100 AI-powered apps from the Google Play Store, including chatbots, photo editors, and health aids. They found many collected excessive data—such as precise location, contact lists, and the contents of private conversations with chatbots—and transmitted it, often unencrypted, to third-party advertising and analytics firms. Some data was sent to servers in countries with lax privacy laws.

The nature of this data is particularly sensitive. Users confide in AI chatbots about medical symptoms, financial worries, and relationship issues, believing these dialogues are confidential. The research suggests this trust is often misplaced. Several apps sent data over unsecured HTTP connections, allowing potential interception on public Wi-Fi networks. Researchers also discovered hardcoded access keys within app code, creating another vulnerability.

These findings place significant scrutiny on Google's Play Store oversight. While Google requires apps to submit Data Safety labels, these are self-reported by developers with little verification. The platform's vast scale—approximately 3.5 million apps—makes consistent enforcement a known challenge. Critics argue AI apps, with their intensive data needs, represent a growing blind spot.

The regulatory environment struggles to keep pace. In the United States, a patchwork of state laws governs privacy, while the European Union's AI Act is still scaling up enforcement. No framework yet specifically addresses the unique risks of AI mobile applications.

For users, the advice is cautious: scrutinize app permissions, avoid granting access to contacts, photos, or location unless essential, and be skeptical of free AI apps with unclear business models. For the industry and its regulators, the report signals an urgent need for stronger safeguards as AI becomes a standard, yet data-hungry, feature of everyday software.
